EHE Graduate Programs

The Department’s cross-divisional affiliation enables us to offer a range of interdisciplinary graduate programs at the intersection of public health and engineering. Our objective is to develop solutions to key challenges in local, national, and global environmental health, with impacts from the molecular to population-wide level. Our graduates are prepared for careers in academia, government, national laboratories, and the private sector.

Master of Science in Engineering in Geography and Environmental Engineering

Master's Programs

Degrees are awarded by their school of origin. All degrees require coursework across disciplines.

Whiting School of Engineering

Master of Arts in Geography and Environmental Engineering (MA)
Onsite | Full-Time | 9 months–1.5 years
Open to students with undergraduate degrees in social sciences or the humanities. Three semesters of coursework are typically required, with the option to complete an independent research project. Students can focus on one of the Department’s areas of interest or construct a program that complements their undergraduate experience.

Master of Science in Geography and Environmental Engineering (MS)
Onsite | Full-Time | 9 months–1.5 years
Designed to prepare students with a science undergraduate background to enter the engineering industry or continue study at the doctoral level. Open to students with undergraduate degrees in engineering, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, geology and other scientific disciplines. Students can choose from tracks or design a curriculum in consultation with their adviser.

Masters of Science in Engineering in Geography and Environmental Engineering (MSE)
Onsite | Full-Time | 9 months–1.5 years
Designed to prepare students with an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree, or demonstrated equivalent, to be leaders in the field or go on to study at the doctoral level. Choose from five tracks and tailor your electives to your career or research goals.

Master of Science in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (MSOEH)
Onsite | Full-Time or Part-Time | 1.5 years
Provides students with the analytical and technical skills needed to identify and address environmental and occupational hazards in the workplace and surrounding community. The program can be customized to meet a variety of professional goals.

Master of Science in Engineering Management
In the Master of Science in Engineering Management program, students lead and innovate in real-world contexts through hands-on projects in start-up environments. In addition to the Management Track, all MSEM students must complete five advanced engineering and science courses (at least 15 credits) in a technical track in consultation with their technical adviser. EHE tracks are:

Bloomberg School of Public Health

Master of Health Science in Environmental Health (MHS)
Onsite | Full-Time or Part-Time | 9 months–2 years
The full-time MHS is a nine-month, coursework-based degree for individuals who want a comprehensive understanding of the association between the environment and health. Students learn how environmental hazards affect human health at the individual, population, and systems level.

Master of Science in Environmental Health (ScM)
Onsite | Full-Time | 2 years
Following one year of coursework, students conduct original research under the direction of a faculty mentor which results in a formal thesis. Graduates of the program are well-prepared to pursue doctoral degree programs and are also competitive for positions in the private sector, federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

Master of Science in Toxicology for Human Risk Assessment (MS)
Onsite / Full-Time (2 years), Onsite / Part-Time (2.5 years), Online / Part-Time (2.5 years)
The program consists of nine months of coursework of the fundamental concepts and testing approaches used in classic risk assessment processes, as well as those used in the new paradigm for toxicity in the 21st Century, followed by a seven- to twelve-month internship with a government agency, non-governmental organization, industry, or private sector group.

Doctoral Programs

Collaborate with leading experts in the field of environmental health and engineering.

Whiting School of Engineering

PhD in Geography and Environmental Engineering
This is a full-time program which offers interdisciplinary learning and research on the intersection of engineering and environmental health. Students complete a core curriculum and tailor their elective course of study based on research interests and career plans.

Bloomberg School of Public Health

DrPH in Environmental Health
The concentration comprises two tracks: Environmental Health and Health Security.

PhD in Environmental Health
This full-time program offers a unique interdisciplinary learning experience. The course of study is tailored based on the student’s interest. Students take a required core curriculum as well as track/program-specific requirements and focused courses in specialized areas.

Combined Bachelor's/Master's Degrees

Bachelor’s/Master's Program in Environmental Health
The Department of Environmental Health and Engineering offers early acceptance to our Master of Health Science program at JHSPH to undergraduate students at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) and the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE).

Bachelor's/Master's Program in Engineering
The combined BS/MSE program is open to current undergraduate students in the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE). Students accepted into the combined program follow the curriculum of the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) program and complete the MSE degree in one or two semesters.

Sponsored Degree

Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM)
he Department partners with the Center for Leadership Education (CLE) to sponsor the Environmental Systems Analysis, Economics and Public Policy technical concentration within the MSEM degree. The MSEM combines advanced coursework in highly-specialized technical fields with professional education in contemporary business, entrepreneurship, and management practices.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

Postdoctoral students spend virtually all their time conducting research in the laboratory of their faculty mentor. While the focus is on conducting research, in consultation with their faculty mentor, postdoctoral students have the opportunity to take selected courses that may advance their training and research capabilities. Attending and giving seminars, journal clubs and participating in research retreats are also an integral part of the postdoctoral training experience.

Applicants for postdoctoral positions first identify a faculty member with whom they wish to work and correspond directly with them. They become postdoctoral students in the program after confirming position availability with that faculty member, submitting a formal application to the program and receiving an official appointment letter.
