Who is eligible to attend the summer institute?

The Summer Institute provides a training opportunity for graduate degree candidates as well as for individuals taking courses for professional development. Institute participants include practicing public health professionals with responsibility for health, safety, and environmental matters in government agencies, non-government organizations, and industry, and for students who are interested in learning more about environmental health sciences concepts.

What materials do I need to submit with my application?

Enrollment in the EHE Summer Institute is a registration process, not a formal application to a degree program. We do not require school transcripts or standardized test results.

When is the application deadline?

Space permitting, applications are accepted until the start of (a) class(es). However, students are strongly encouraged to register by May 15, 2018 in order to ensure they receive course confirmation and course materials in advance, and to avoid cancellations.

Are the courses available for academic credit?

All Summer Institute courses are offered for academic credit. Institute participants who wish to take courses for academic credit but are not currently enrolled in a degree program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health may register as a Special Student Limited and receive academic credit.

Students registered as special students limited may accumulate a maximum of 16 credits total. After 16 credits have been earned, application to and acceptance in special student regular or degree status at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is required.

Academic credit registration generates an official transcript from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; students are required to fulfill course requirements and methods of evaluation. Students registered for academic credit may choose either a letter grade or Pass/Fail grade option. Please refer to course descriptions for the number of credits available for each course. 

Students registered for non-credit do not receive an official transcript of their coursework and are not required to participate in course evaluations. However, the work of all students who complete course requirements will be evaluated and graded. Non-credit students may request a formal statement of their performance in courses from the Summer Institute. Registration status may not be retro-actively converted after the stated deadlines. 

What are the tuition and fees?

Academic Credit: The 2018 tuition rate for academic credit is $1128* per course credit unit. The number of credits for each course is listed with the course description.

Non-Credit: The 2018 tuition rate for non-credit tuition is $564* per course credit unit.

When is payment due?

Full payment is requested with the application. All applications must be accompanied by payment in full. Applications received without full payment will not be processed. Total payments must be received before the start of classes. Checks should be made payable to the Johns Hopkins University and must be in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank. Any bank charges incurred for processing will be charged to the registrant. Discover, MasterCard, Visa, and American Express Payments are accepted.

What forms of payment do you accept at the summer institute?

We accept American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, cash, personal and business checks, purchase orders/contract forms.

Are tuition fees payable on arrival or departure?

The balance of fees is requested with the application in order to expedite the registration procedure. All registrants should be prepared to provide full payment to the Graduate Summer Institute for any balance of their tuition in U.S. dollars before the start of classes. Participants financed by such organizations as the federal government, WHO, etc., should arrange with their agencies to provide supporting documents (purchase orders, training nomination forms, etc.) along with submission of their applications.

I’ve taken (a) class(es) for credit. When/how can I find out my grades?

Students who register for academic credit will be able to get a transcript of their Summer Institute grades. To have transcripts forwarded to another institution, a written request must be submitted to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Registrar's Office at least ten working days before the transcript is needed. Students who want Summer Institute courses applied to degree programs at other institutions should consult with their home institution regarding transfer of credits and credit conversion.

Is there parking at the Bloomberg School of Public Health?

There are a few parking garages around the School of Public Health. We recommend you park in the Washington Street Garage on the corner of E. Monument and Washington Streets, across the street from the School of Public Health. There is an hourly fee charged to park in the garages.

Do you have computers available for general use?

The School of Public Health has two computer labs that are available for general use when they are not occupied by a class.

Are there athletic facilities on campus?

Yes. Summer Institute participants may use the Denton Cooley Athletic Center located on the JHMI campus. Participants will be required to pay a small fee.

Do you have a pick-up service from the airport?

The Summer Institute does not provide transportation to and from the airport. We suggest participants make use of the ground transportation services offered by BWI Airport.
